Emotional Intelligence Through Movement: Your Body Speaks Fluently Two

Movement gives us access our emotional landscape.

When was the last time you let your body express what words couldn't capture?

We've been taught to name our emotions—happy, sad, angry—but that barely scratches the surface of what we actually feel. What about that mix of excitement and terror before a big change? That subtle space between content and joyful? That feeling when you're not quite angry but definitely not calm?

Movement gives us access our emotional landscape.

When I ask someone to show me with their hands what "frustrated but hopeful" feels like, something magical happens. Suddenly, they can express what they couldn't name. Their body knows what that emotion is, even when they can’t express it with words.

This is why I created The Power of Gesture®. Moving with intention connects you to emotions you may not have words for. It expands your emotional vocabulary beyond the list we typically use and helps you build one without words as well.

Try this: Close your eyes. Feel the emotion you're experiencing. Let your hands create a gesture that expresses it. No planning, no thinking—just allow your hands to move. Stay “in it” for a bit. Let your hands dance, move, hold and move the energy you are experiencing. I recommend giving yourself at least a minute for this exercise.

What did your body just tell you? Did anything open up for you? Do you feel differently?  Allow that information to inform you and deepen your self awareness.

The more fluent you become in your body's emotional language, the more clearly you can navigate relationships, make decisions, and understand yourself. All of which will help you feel empowered in your life.

Your body has been speaking to you right now. Try to slow down, listen and embrace what shows up.
